Six Female Students Arrested for Orchestrating "Attack a Teacher Day" via Facebook

Talk about social networking gone wrong. According to the Associated Press, half a dozen middle school girls have been arrested for allegedly inviting other students through Facebook to participate in 'Attack a Teacher Day.'

The students involved say it was just a joke, but no one at the school is laughing. Dan Sadler, a principal at one of the two middle schools targeted, points out that the arrests happened the same day a suspended 17-year-old student in Nebraska shot and killed an assistant principal and wounded a principal before killing himself.

'School shootings really happen. That's why we took it seriously,' Sadler said. 'It's not OK, and it's not funny in this day and age if you're go make a threat against a teacher.'

Invites to participate reportedly went out to around 100 students, 18 of which accepted.

'Even if the six girls meant it as a joke, there's no way to know if the other students who accepted the invitation weren't going to carry out the attacks in some fashion,' said Carson City sheriff Deputy Jessica Rivera. 'The school shooting in Nebraska is just another thing that shows us you can't take this kind of situation lightly.'

The teachers who were targeted were surprised by the incident, in part because they describe the six individuals involved as good students, some with top grades and some with leadership positions at the schools.
